Fleeing the radioactive ruins of Denver with a minivan packed with orphaned children and traumatized coworkers, programmer Max is just trying to reach the promised safety of his friend’s fortified Iowa farm. But the wasteland of the American Midwest holds deadlier threats than highway wreckage and supply shortages. The undead are no longer just mindless shamblers—cunning "super zombies" are laying roadside ambushes, coordinating pack tactics, and obeying a mysterious psychic pull drawing hundreds of thousands of infected eastward. Meanwhile, back in Iowa, desperate state authorities enact ruthless emergency drafts, forcing ordinary citizens and boys into the line of fire. As the living unravel under the crushing strain of survival, Max and his ragtag convoy must outrun a relentlessly growing nightmare where the infected are learning to think, organize, and hunt.

The suburbs of Denver were no place to stay during a zombie outbreak, even worse the nuclear fallout was making the place downright uninhabitable. Max and his companions needed to get out of town fast, before they joined the ranks of the living dead or the just good old fashioned dead. The four adults had four kids to look after too, so they loaded up the minivan and headed east. Why east? It was true that would take them past the worst of the radioactive fallout, however the other ways out of town were even worse. To the east was Max’s old high school friend, Bill, who lived on a farm in Iowa. Tom, one of the survivors with the group, also had parents who lived in North Platte, which was a stop along the way. Maybe Iowa hadn’t been hit as hard or perhaps the roads would be clear once they got to Nebraska? Out in Iowa Bill was just living his normal life, there was something going on in other parts of the country, some sort of violence, but when wasn’t that the case? All too quickly his normal world came crashing down around him and he is forced to choose the least bad option out of many bad options in order to ensure the survival of his family.
