As a ‘content creator’ for humanity, which we all are, sometimes I don’t have a whole lot to talk about. Every one of us starts spewing ‘creations’ from the moment we pick up one material and spread it on another. For me my medium is words and I think sometimes that I am a writer, an author, a word smith! Whoo-hoo! Those are good dreams to have and to be fair, I have written things. I have also been told, by people not related to me or paid by me, that the things I have written have brought them joy. So, I’ll take that. Talking about writing is something I discuss here quite a bit; I enjoy it, I like going to the tea house, drinking kava and typing three thousand words over the course of a few hours. The story is new to me and like reading a book no one else ever has on a subject I am interested in. I love that, which is why I do it.
I also enjoy playing dungeons and dragons style role playing games, both as a ‘forever DM’ (guy who makes the world the other players loot and pillage and runs the game) and as an occasional player. Lately I’ve been running old school revival style games (OSR), using a set of rules modelled after the first advanced edition of Dungeons and Dragons called Hyperborea (https://www.hyperborea.tv/). This rule set strikes my fancy, Jeffery P Talanian, the creator/author of these rules is meticulous in his design, which I appreciate, even if I can’t emulate in my own content. Something about strapping on a sword or picking up a spear and venturing into a decaying wasteland of humanity always appeals to me. I am 100% sure doing in ‘real life’ would be far less appealing.
As for being a player in these games, I am only in Savage Worlds (https://shop.peginc.com/) games now, both of the ‘Savage Pathfinder’ variety, which doesn’t quite hit that sweet spot for me, though I can’t tell you why. I love the savage worlds rules, they are both crunchy and light at the same time, easy to pick up, but easy to min-max as well. It is my favorite thing to run a game where the players care more about their characters than they do about getting every extra point of damage out of one of their attacks. If you want to play a wargame, there are plenty of those style games both as board games and computer games to choose from. I appreciate a good level of intrigue with some things to figure out in my games and finding the right players or game master is challenging at the best of times. Gaming for me is similar to writing, only with a group of people, we all make the story together and sometimes it goes in unforeseen (by me) ways, which is lovely!
